Unveiling of new display

A local volunteer group has found a water mill hidden in the woods they look after and will be showing the results to the public on Saturday 14th December.

The mill, which had probably been working during the time of Henry the eighth and Wolf Hall, is in the Upper Dearne Woods between Denby Dale and Upper Cumberworth.

They think that a water wheel would have driven a great hammer to pound cloth in a vat of stale urine to thicken and strengthen the pieces of woollen cloth which local people had woven in their homes.

The group, the Upper Dearne Woodlands Group, have been investigating the site in conjunction with members of the Huddersfield and District Archaeology Society and have produced information boards which will be unveiled at the site on Saturday 14th December at 2 in the afternoon.

All will be welcomed with mince pies.

Not only did they discover the remains of the mill, but also found proof that there had been Stone Age hunters here, thousands of years earlier.

They unearthed what they believe is a broken flint arrowhead which had been lost ever since the time when Stonehenge was being built.

The woods are situated off the Barnsley Road above Denby Dale. Visitors can walk down the short track from the Barnsley road (A635), (HD8 8NN) opposite the turn off to the council recycling site.

The woods are open to the public at all times but there is no car access.

The archaeological site is a short walk down the track- the route will be signed.
